What is self-efficacy?

Self-efficacy is one's belief regarding his or her capabilities to produce delegated levels of performance that wield power over actions affecting his or her lives [Bandura, 1994]. Self-efficacy describes one's belief of his or her ability to succeed. One possessing a strong sense of self-efficacy confronts situations head-on rather than attempting to avoid them. Those with high self-efficacy believe failure is a result of lack of knowledge, skills, or effort. This type of personality is more likely to generate personal accomplishments and minimize or eliminate stress and depression [Bandura, 1994].

Strong self-efficacy can develop by four main origins:
