In preparation for this week's discussion visit the site, Lost Among Us at http://lang.sbsun.com/projects/lostamongus/displayarticle.asp?part=6&article=art02_saida03
and get to know the sad case of Saida Dugally, a real-life woman who suffered from bipolar disorder until her tragic death in 2003. On this web resource you will find videos of her story and the timeline of her decline into mental illness, as well as journal excerpts and photos from her life.
Saidas story is but one among many. According to the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), an estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older about one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.
Q1: After visiting the above website and completing this weeks chapter readings, respond to the following questions placing the name of the disorder you select in your initial post subject title:
Q2: What do you think would be a most difficult psychological disorder with which to cope?
Q3: What would be effective treatment for this condition? Note: While some treatments are more effective with particular disorders than others, there are no disorders for which it can correctly be said that there are no treatments. If you pick a disorder for which treatments are not discussed in much detail or at all in our course textbook you will need to research treatment options for it. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website at http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/index.shtml is excellent resource with quality research substantiated information for doing so. Blogs, news sites, Wikipedia, WebMD or other .com or .org websites can be used.
Q4: If you were dealing with this life problem, what would you need from society? Think beyond understanding and acceptance, which are things everyone needs from society, here.
Q5: What would you need from those close to you? As with Question 4 above, think beyond needing love and support here.
